Indian Earthquakes : An Overview

چکیده

India has a very high frequency of great earthquakes (magnitude greater than 8.0); for instance, during 1897 to 1950, the country was hit by four great earthquakes. However, the frequency of moderate earthquakes (magnitude 6.0 to 7.0) in the country is rather low. Moderate earthquakes create awareness and lead to improvements in construction at a low human cost. We have not had a earthquake of magnitude greater than 7.0 in the last 40 years. Also, we have also not seen earthquake shaking intensity of more than VIII or IX in the last 40 years. And finally, except the Jabalpur earthquake (1997), the other recent moderate earthquakes have not hit any of the large cities. This has led to complacence in our earthquake preparedness. We now have orders of magnitude higher levels of man-made construction and a significantly larger population than what we had at the time of great earthquakes of 1897, 1934, or 1950; hence, we are that much more vulnerable to earthquake disasters.

Recurrent seismicity in Rajasthan State in the tectonically stable NW Indian Craton

Indian peninsular region comprises several Archean cratonic blocks (Dharwar, Bastar, Singhbhum, Aravalli – Bundelkhand), bordered by Proterozoic mobile belts. Therefore, this region is considered as tectonically stable and designated as the least vulnerable region to earthquake hazard except the still active Central Indian Tectonic Zone (CITZ). The latter is a major suture between southern and ...

Flexure of the Indian Plate and Intraplate Earthquakes

The flexural bulge in central India resulting from India's collision with Tibet has a wavelength of approximately 670 km. It is manifest topographically and in the freeair gravity anomaly and the geoid. Calculations of the stress distribution within a flexed Indian plate reveal spatial variations throughout the depth of the plate and also a function of distnace from the Himalaya. The wavelength...

Geodetic contributions to the study of seismotectonics in India

Earthquakes in India are caused by the release of elastic strain energy created and replenished by the stresses resulting from India’s collision with Asia. Accumulating strain distorts the surface of the Indian plate, which despite its slow development can now be detected using precision geodesy. The largest and most severe earthquakes occur on the boundaries of the Indian plate to the east, no...

Survivability Improvement Against Earthquakes in Backbone Optical Networks Using Actual Seismic Zone Information

Optical backbone networks carry a huge amount of bandwidth and serve as a key enabling technology to provide telecommunication connectivity across the world. Currently, fiber-optic cables carry about 99% of global Internet traffic. Hence, in events of network component (node/link) failures, communication networks may suffer from huge amount of bandwidth loss and service disruptions. Natural dis...

Advances in earthquake and tsunami sciences and disaster risk reduction since the 2004 Indian ocean tsunami

The December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was the worst tsunami disaster in the world’s history with more than 200,000 casualties. This disaster was attributed to giant size (magnitude M ~ 9, source length >1000 km) of the earthquake, lacks of expectation of such an earthquake, tsunami warning system, knowledge and preparedness for tsunamis in the Indian Ocean countries. In the last ten years, sei...
